However, the economic benefit depends on transformer criticality: monitoring a small replaceable distribution unit is different from monitoring a custom GSU or interconnector transformer with a multi-year replacement lead time.

**Decision insight:** Report growth capex/MVA, sustaining factory capex/MVA shipped and owner O&M separately. For all named players, maintenance capex per produced unit remains **N/D**.

## Product and Technology Shifts: HVDC, Dry-Type and SST

### HVDC and UHV remain the incumbent engineering bottleneck

Long-distance renewable evacuation and interconnectors increase demand for converter transformers, reactors and phase-shifting units. Hitachi Energy cites more than **20 800 kV UHVDC units** and more than **500 735-765 kV AC units** in its portfolio [6]. TBEA reports development capability from **6 to 1000 kV AC** and **+/-100 to +/-1100 kV DC** [16]. Hyosung offers units up to **765 kV and 1,500 MVA** [12].

GE Vernova's approximately **$200M** Hai Phong investment is explicitly aimed at large power transformers primarily for HVDC, with full operation planned for 2028 [8]. These examples reveal why HV supply does not normalize as quickly as distribution supply: experience references, insulation design, transport, customer witness testing and large test bays cannot be replicated simply by adding winding labor.

### Dry-type gains from buildings, factories and data centers

Dry-type equipment avoids liquid dielectric and is favored where fire, indoor installation and environmental constraints matter. Hammond positions itself as North America's largest dry-type manufacturer and serves EV charging, renewables, commercial infrastructure, mining and manufacturing [15]. Voltamp's **2,300 MVA** greenfield dry-type expansion shows that Indian suppliers also see this product as an attractive adjacency [28].

### SST is a different architecture, not a drop-in commodity replacement

Amperesand describes configurable MV AC to LV DC equipment for global 800 V DC AI-factory architectures [77]. Its system claims conversion efficiency above **98.5%** [75]. Heron Link similarly targets **34.5 kV AC to 800 V DC**, integrating ride-through support and removing several legacy conversion stages [78]. Delta has implemented an SST system at a Chindata site in North China [79].

Commercial validation is progressing. Eaton acquired Resilient Power Systems in 2025 to accelerate MV SST commercialization for data centers and energy storage [80]. Enphase announced an IQ SST for AI data centers and estimated an initial annual US opportunity above **11 GW by 2031** [76]. An NC State, NYPA and EPRI project validated a **1 MW** SST on a live utility feeder and described it as the first independently verified megawatt-class unit in that setting [81].

**Decision insight:** Conventional HVDC, dry-type and SST should be modeled as three separate growth pools. HVDC rewards references and test assets; dry-type rewards scalable production and channels; SST remains a technology-adoption option with certification and reliability risk.

Three non-obvious conclusions emerge. First, MVA is least informative where value is highest: a scarce HVDC converter transformer and thousands of standardized distribution units cannot be compared using capacity alone. Second, the largest disclosed expansion ratios come from Indian and Asian suppliers, but the strongest installed-base and service moats remain with the global incumbents. Third, SST may reduce the number of legacy conversion stages in selected data centers, yet it does not remove the conventional grid's need for bulk transmission and widespread distribution transformation.

For **buyers**, the optimal strategy is segmented procurement: long-term slots and spares for HV/EHV, standardized specifications and multiple qualified sources for distribution, and pilot-based contracting for SST. For **manufacturers**, the priority is to measure committed backlog against each capacity phase, localize bottleneck components and protect service capability. For **investors**, the most useful earnings bridge is orders -> backlog -> qualified capacity -> shipments -> price/MVA -> segment margin -> cash conversion. Announced MVA and global market CAGR are not sufficient.

The overall market remains attractive because replacement, electrification, renewable integration and data-center load are simultaneous rather than isolated drivers. The central risk is timing: supply can remain structurally tight in HV equipment while becoming cyclical in standardized products.
